Winter started early – I entered Armenia overland in late October and the next day it started snowing. When I reached Tatev, high in the mountains, it was freezing cold. I secured accommodation at a nearby guesthouse and went to visit the nearby monastery complex, one of the best-known in Armenia.
The medieval cathedral stood stark and still as it did for centuries. The barren interior was livened by the beautiful Armenian church music softly playing from hidden speakers, and there was a small wedding party at the altar.
Among the people present, there was a young girl, with a white scarf, running around amid the ceremony like a little butterfly. She entertained herself, and her warm liveliness was in striking contrast to the cold stone walls, frigid air inside and melodic but solemn music and priest’s voice echoing throughout the temple.
And that’s how my favourite picture from my trip to Armenia was taken.
